Embryogenesis of Gryllus bimaculatus

project ideas brainstorming session 26 August 2016

References emerging from 26 August project brainstorming

References on Drosophila gut development
I could not quickly find any good careful overviews of this process in embryonic development, but these references contain some information on some of the likely genetic mechanisms playing a role in the process, and a nice review on the structure and morphogenesis of the adult gut (which is created de novo during metamorphosis).

Classic references on orthopteran embryogenesis.
Orthoptera is the insect order containing grasshoppers, locusts, and crickets like Gryllus bimaculatus. Even though these papers describe non-Gryllus species, many overall aspects of development in Gryllus are nearly identical to those described for the species in these papers.

Lightsheet imaging of Drosophila embryogenesis
Includes papers on the technique itself, and how it has been used to study Drosophila embryonic development.

Here is a website created by the authors of this paper (you can download the PDF on the "QBio Resources" page of this Wiki) that contains their raw lightsheet data of Tribolium embryogenesis.

Nuclear fallout
References on some of the genetic mechanisms underlying the phenomenon of "nuclear fallout" in the Drosophila blastoderm.

Insect extra-embryonic membranes and blastokinesis
A review on these processes comparing reports from the literature across insects, and a primary data paper looking at these issues in Tribolium castaneum.

Overview and perspectives on the evolution of embryonic patterning in insects
A few examples of some influential perspective pieces by Klaus Sander, and a piece discussing his massive contributions to the field.
